9th BAKUNAWA YOUNG CINEMA

FILM + ART FILM FESTIVAL  I  OCT TO DEC 2022  I  THE PHILIPPINES

Bakunawa Cinema of the Young is the first genre film festival in the Philippines; ran by volunteers especially during these pandemic years when we don't have corporate sponsors.. By young we mean fresh, new, creative, innovative films. Bakunawa is a mythical dragon-like creature in Philippine mythology that devoured moons. For us, Bakunawa symbolizes the creative monsters inside us.

Though Bakunawa Young Cinema is composed of non-competitive sections, we invited three of the youngest and most notable film critics to the 8th edition. First time to be gathered together in a film festival, film critics Skilty Labastilla, Jason Tan Liwag and Richard Bolisay will be deciding and handing out the festival's Critics' Citations. Meet and get them to know our invited guest Film Critics!

Bakunawa recommendations
for Cinema Rehiyon 14

Bakunawa makes history in Cinema Rehiyon as the festival sends films from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, breaking the "geographical" stereotype. Patrick Pangan's Shapeshifters (Rizal) joins Gab Carmelo's Round Trip (South Cotabato), Fundz Tipon's Lang-at and Kurt Soberano's Sa Balay ni Papang (Bacolod, Negros Occidental) as Bakunawa's recommendations for the 14th edition of the country's biggest gathering of the best short films..

BAKUNAWA YOUNG CINEMA

Before the pandemic, Bakunawa Cinema of the Young conducts an annual film camp and series of film workshops for young filmmakers that culminates into a film festival - mostly of genre films (horror, sci-fi, fantasy, folk, noir, folk, etc). The films that the film camp participants produce are the ones that compete for the top prize.
